The breeding program at
Magnolia Walkers is first and foremost to
breed horses with a high degree of
intelligence. I have found over the years
that I can get so much more out of a horse
when he is very intelligent. In addition to
breeding for size, basic colors, bone
structure, good feet, great disposition and,
of course, old fashioned naturally gaited
horses, our emphasis is on INTELLIGENCE!
In my opinion, all of
these qualities come to the forefront in the
bloodlines of Mack K's Handshaker, Rodger's
Perfection, Midnight Mack K, and ole
Midnight Sun himself.
Although the above
mentioned horses were each a bit different
from the other, they all possessed some, if
not all of the traits, we are desiring to
reproduce in each of our horses. It will
never be easy to "get all the coons up in
one tree" but that is our goal.
| It appears that we are coming
very close in this endeavor as our
horses learn so many good things so
quickly, some are total show-offs in
demonstrating a repertoire of
amusing tricks, much to the delight
of many of our visitors. |

This is possible due to
their superior intelligence and their
superior body construction. We like horses
with a natural headset, one that is
perpendicular, one that allows him to nod
his head in cadence with his feet. We use
our horses out in the great outdoors mostly
in broken, rough country, through bottoms,
creeks, rocky slopes and ledges, around,
thru, and over west Texas cactus. Therefore,
we want our horses looking for armadillo
holes and any other treacherous conditions
confronting them. The natural headset also
arches the horses neck to make the
appearance of a handsome and regal looking
horse as he struts his running walk and
canter.

We know our horses are so
versatile that they can be used very
successfully in shows, trail rides,
cantering behind wide-ranging bird dogs in
rough, open country or whatever. This is the
result of breeding select individuals which
will be made right. Always with
INTELLIGENCE first!

We strive for free and
loose joints enabling the horse to walk even
faster. The eyes should be large, full and
intelligent. We like a deep bodied horse
with a short back, full flanks and a deep,
wide chest. Necks should be set on sloping,
well muscled shoulders. They need to be
long-legged, well boned with curvature in
the hind legs enabling them to set up under
the hind quarters giving them enormous power
and smoothness as the front legs reach out
high. We believe the height of the horse
has much to do with his overall
conformation, therefore we are breeding
Magnificent Mack K to our largest mares and
getting very good-sized horses.
We feel very confident that what we are
producing will do very well in the show
rings of the future as our horses are so
graceful with accentuated natural gaits, and
they all do it barefoot. In a nutshell we
are striving to bring back to the breed, for
the pleasure rider, field trialer, trail
rider, and show ring enthusiasts alike, that
great, great horse from the past - -
Midnight Mack K!
